Maleic Anhydride (MA)
15 Dec 2025 Justus

Maleic Anhydride is an organic chemical compound with the formula C4H2O3 that is commonly used in various industrial sectors. This compound is known for its high reactivity, making it a highly important intermediate chemical for the synthesis of various downstream chemical products.

Physical and Chemical Properties

At room temperature, maleic anhydride is a white crystalline solid with a strong, choking odor. Its melting point is relatively low, approximately 52.8 °C, and its boiling point is 202.0 °C.

Chemically, the molecule has two acid carbonyl groups and one double bond, which facilitate various chemical reactions such as copolymerization and esterification, and it readily reacts with other organic compounds.

Production Process

Maleic anhydride is produced from benzene. However, modern production methods today mostly involve the catalytic oxidation of n-butane. This process is more efficient and environmentally friendly. PT Justus Sakti Raya is the only MA producer in Indonesia.

Main Industrial Applications

Maleic anhydride is a versatile raw material with diverse applications.

Its main uses include:

  • Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR): This is the largest application, where MA is used as a primary raw material in UPR production, which is widely used in the manufacture of fiberglass, automotive components, and building materials.
  • Food Additives & Flavor Enhancers: For food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, such as Fumaric Acid and Malic Acid.
  • Plasticizer: This compound is used in industry to make materials more flexible.
  • Agrochemicals: Used to produce pesticides, insecticides, and fungicides.
  • 1,4-Butanediol (BDO): To produce many chemical derivatives for biodegradable plastics (PBAT and PBS), solvents (THF), elastic fibers (spandex), polyurethane elastomers, and engineering plastics (PBT).
  • Coatings and Paints: Used as a material in alkyd resins and surface coatings.
  • Other Additives: Also used as a lubricant additive, paper chemical, textile finishing agent, and surface-active agent (surfactant).

Industrial Benefits and Economic Significance

The role of maleic anhydride in industry is highly important, not only as a standalone chemical but also as a driver in downstream production value chains.

Its main benefits include:

  1. Improved Material Performance: By using it as a raw material for UPR resin, industries can create lightweight yet very strong composite materials (fiberglass), enabling innovation in construction, marine, and automotive applications.
  2. Flexibility of Plastic Products: As a plasticizer raw material, MA enables the production of more flexible and durable PVC plastic products, from cables to floor coverings.
  3. Production Efficiency: Modern n-butane-based production processes are more cost-effective and energy-efficient than older methods and support the circular economy in the petrochemical industry.
  4. Basis for Innovation: As a reactive intermediate, MA serves as a foundation for the development of various new specialty chemicals that meet continually evolving market needs.

Maleic anhydride is an important pillar of the modern chemical industry, enabling the production of various materials and products used in everyday life while providing significant economic benefits through improved quality and diversification of industrial products.
